How to Glaze Inkwells — Inside & Out

I used to glaze these inkwells in one, held with a pair of tongs on the outside, dipped entirely to allow the glaze to bubble inside, then I’d pour it out. The only issue with that method was that it took too long for the glaze to bubble inside sufficiently enough through the narrow opening, often resulting in layers of glaze too thick both inside and out. Nowadays I do it like this. It takes a day or so longer but that’s no problem. I place my thumb into the opening and carefully push it underneath the glaze until the red iron oxide based feldspathic crackle glaze hits my thumb. It’s held there for a brief moment before being pulled out.

The glaze on the outside dries overnight and then, the following morning, I’ll pour a slightly thinner mixture of the glaze inside, swirl it around, and then let it pour out. There’s usually some cleaning up that needs to be done thereafter but by doing this the layers of glaze around the vessel tend to be far more consistent in terms of thickness and generally it’s all a bit tidier too.

Legend has it there's 4, 895 ink wells at the bottom of the bucket

Its nice to see a video like this with no music or chatter, just a guy dipping inkwells in a bucket of glaze.

Today I learned 1) people still manufacture inkwells, 2) they are glazed, 3) this is how one glazes them.

If I tried this the inkwell would definitely slip off my finger and I'd never find it in the bucket.

Thank you sweet baby Jesus! I woke up this morning and was like how in the hell do I glaze an ink well? And now I know. Now I have to figure out how to make one so I can glaze it.

This looks like a massive amount of glaze — how long/how many pieces will this last you?

I love ceramics! I'm looking for anyone that's caught on that this is a deep green glaze. Lots of people who don't understand the chemistry behind glazing are shocked to see what colours look like before and after they're fired. 😊

“Come with me to the inkwell isle, it’s just up the road maybe 29 miles, where there’s good and there’s bad an there’s in-between…”

I remember painting on glaze in highschool ceramics and it always looking awful because it was patchy and we were never sure what the glaze would even look like aside from what the name of it was. This method seems more effective.

I don’t usually think anything is satisfying, but this is VERY satisfying.

Great for applying the glaze, but from what I remember of the ceramics lessons in my middle school art class, the next step is putting the item, in this case the ink well, back into the kiln to essentially turn it from dried mud to glass.

That sound of the bottom of the inkwell clapping the glaze at the beginning is so satisfying.

Is it me? Or the dripping with the silence matches so well 😌

Do you glaze the inside first, bake, then glaze the outside? Or are some inkwells only glazed on the inside, others only on the outside? Or does it not matter if you leave a fingerprint on the inner glaze?

My old art teacher would go crazy with that much glaze 😂
