Fantastic practical information for the average computer user.

In theory, USB 3.0 can transfer data at a rate of 5 gigabits per second (5 Gbps), but in practice, it often feels more like 5 gigabytes in 5 minutes due to various factors that can affect data transfer speeds.

I don't usually take time to comment, but I was super curious on the difference, figured it would be a hassle to find legit info on this, first video I clicked on, this one, was one of the best info vids I've ever come across, far above and beyond what I was expecting to find.

Thanks, i actually found this very useful because i couldn't actually tell what version were my usb's and i was thinking about buying a decent 128gb usb, so this video helped me with that. Very useful, informative, simple, and most importantly straight to the point.

Depends on the file size during transfer too, how fast your transfer speed will be. Which works hand in hand with allocation block size you set when you format the drive. Something I'm curious about is heat generated by external hard drives when utilizing USB 3.0 speeds. I have always used USB 2.0 due to lack of 3.0 ports. Now that I have them, I still use USB 2.0 for fear that increased transfer speed might put extra wear and tear on my external drive. Speed is nice, but durability is much more important in my opinion. Especially when you don't have backups of your data.

Huh for the longest time I didn't knew about the 3.0 port. Got myself old laptop and desktop so whether i have a 3.0 pendrive or external drive with 3.0 portable it would not have matter all together. I would have need 3.0 port on my pc/laptop to gain that extra speed. Well you learn something new everyday. Thank you for this you deserve a like for this.

Well explained, to the point yet comprehensive. Question: Can I leave a usb plugged into my desktop or laptop all the time without consequence? Thanks for your great work and I definitely subscribed!

When it comes to connecting a microphone or a keyboard does it make a difference?

I never even pondered it until now what the difference would be. I have 6 3.0 ports on my pc but is it really doing anything better than 2.0? Unless I'm using it to transfer data? All this time I've made sure my mouse is in a 3.0

Thanks a lot for posting this! Can I use a USB A 3.0 to lightning cable, to charge my devices?

What's a good way to determine the type of usb cord (2.0 or 3.0) and they are both black. I have 20+ and have mixed them together when I moved. Didn't know there was a difference at that time. Thanks

What is irritating is the new USB C ports on laptops that only have one of the old style connection. I need one for a mouse and one for a flash drive so it forces me to use the touchpad when I have to have the flash drive.
