XY-PDS100 PD Charging Module Teardown and Review

Показать описание
The XY PDS 100 is a low cost step down charging module that supports a vast range of charging protocols. It supports up to around 30V input, however the input voltage must be higher than the output voltage. The module supports a maximum of 100W output on the type C port, and a maximum of 36W on the type A port.

The enclosure is built out of extruded aluminum which can easily be disassembled for repair or modification - like this one which has an XT60 connector instead of the 5.5*2.5mm DC jack.

Due to the wide range of input voltages, this module has many different applications based on the desired functionality, for example charging a laptop over power delivery using a custom built portable battery pack -which has 77Wh of storage capacity and should charge a laptop 1 and a half times, or a modern smartphone around 5 times.

The PCB overall appears to be well designed and assembled, although some of my ports were not soldered on perfectly straight.

For less than $15 delivered it represents great value as long the desired output voltage is less than the input voltage.

thanks a lot for the great review. Could you reliably charge your laptop with it? My laptop is usb-c PD and wants 20v, 3.25a. So this unit must be able to charge it? How was your experience?

Do you know what happens when you plug in let's say a 12V DC (from a AC/DC power adapter) and a usb-c powerbank on the inputs? That'll break the inputs due to power flowing back?

I charged a small usb power bank from the usb A port. IIRC it output 8A at 5V, might have been slightly lower. Anyhow it seemed to wreck the power bank and the USB-A connector doesn't work anymore. However the USB-C port still does.

I'd like to see how you soldered that XT-60 connector on there. Does it connect well with the board? Do you think it is well connected vs the surface mounted barrel connector? Is there anything unique regarding the XT-60 connector used?

Do you happen to know what size the barrel plug for the DC in is on this?
