I love the 50's the first decade of boxing in the heavyweight division where we saw more skilled fighters and bigger punchers, I'm glad your doing a documentary on this decade as well, good luck.

Brilliant introduction to the 50s good Sir.I'm a massive fan of Joe Louis and I'm so looking forward to
seeing him at his peak in your 30s and 40s timelines, ( but Mr Louis could still dish out some hurt in the 50s ! )
Ezzard Charles really was a brilliant fighter, the folks back then should have appreciated him more.Ditto Mr Walcott.

It's funny how the lineal championship sometimes "reverts" to the boxer coming out of retirement but sometimes it does not. It did in case of Sullivan, Corbett, Fitzsimmons and some people considered Ali the heavyweight champion after he came back from exile. It didn't revert in case of Jeffries, Louis and Ali for the second time. Jeffries was a chellenger to Johnson's title, Louis was also a challenger to Charles' NBA belt (Ezzard wasn't universally recognized as the champion at the time) and Ali himself didn't consider himself a champion when facing Holmes - he wanted to win the championship back for the record fourth time. Larry was The Ring champion at the time which was the authority to crown lineal champions.

Wonder what would happen if Lennox came back now. Well, I guess that's the downside of the title that doesn't really exist - recognistion changes. I remember when people were questioning Fury's claim to the lineage saying Wlad was never a lineal champion because he wasn't undisputed, not understanding what the lineal title was. I guess there is no obstacle in having two lineages and two boxers with valid claims to the championship. As by lineal we mean THE RIGHTFUL champion. But if we have two champions - what's the point of tracing the lineage anyway?

I guess the emeritus and interim champion statuses could do a lot in this debate. For example: Oleksandr Usyk beats Fury in December and retires. The throne is vacant but Usyk still holds the champion emeritus status. The next matchup between 1 and 2 crowns the interim champion. If Usyk doesn't come back, the interim champ turns into the rightful champ. But what would be the deadline of "emeritus" status? 3 years and 3 months - the longest period of inactivity by the lineal champion (Jess Willard)?

You could say it always eventually settles itself out, but the whole point of tracing the lineage is to say here and now who is the real champion not the mere title holder. Dariusz Michalczewski/Roy Jones Jr eventually settled itself out when Zsolt Erdei (descendent of Hill/Michalczewski line) and Joe Calzaghe (descendent of Jones line) retired. But who was THE light heavyweight champion in 2002? Who was the one in 2008?

I guess it's still better than alphabet titles for sure, no matter how complicated it is.
