China’s economy has dropped out of the news recently and not only because the media seems obsessed with the new American President. The Yuan has returned from December’s eight-year low against the dollar but the pattern of the past three years,  devaluation, and recovery followed by further losses has not broken. In the questionable world of Chinese economic statistics, the Yuan is probably the best guide to the state of the mainland economy and the prognosis is not good. The decline of the currency has accelerated each year since it began at the end of 2013: 2014 2.55%, 2015 4.63%, 2016 7.11%.  The world’s second largest economy will not remain incognito for long.
