Koch 63’OD All Tube Overdrive / Preamp Pedal. An interesting alternative for going direct.

Hey All

This is the 63’OD for Koch Amplifiers in The Netherlands. Its an all tube 2 channel preamplifier with footswitchable channels and a footswitchable gain boost. It features a three band EQ as well as clean volume and drive channel gain and volume knobs.

The feature set only really begins there. This pedal is very well thought out and feature rich. It includes a speaker compensated XLR output for Recording or gong direct to the PA live if you want to leave your amp at home. It also has an uncompensated jack output which you could use to feed your amp for onstage monitoring while you send the XLR to the PA.

It also has a PSU out beside the PSU in for powering other pedals. this is rated at 9V and 200 MA so it could easily power any other alalog pedals you might want to use which is really handy.

Lastly there are 2 effects loops. One before the Preamp and one after the preamp but before the outputs allowing you to wire the 63’OD into your board correctly so all your iother pedals interact with it correctly.

The pedal sounds excellent and organic and amp like in both direct and monitoring situations but one drawback is I think the EQ could be more poweful. The XLR output at times is lacking in high end and can sound a bit dull. I sorted this with a bit of EQ but I think the XLR out could be voiced a little better.

All in all. I'll definitely be using the 63’OD as the main source of direct sound for my wedding/function band as it really does sound and particularly feel outstanding. Though I would recommend pairing it with an EQ pedal to ensure it works in all applications.

Thx for watching and feel free to tell me you love the sound of the guitar and that I'm bonkers below!

This review video was very well done. I noticed that there is a power jack input for 12VAC. This means that it does not use the same type of power supply as most guitar pedals. It takes a 12VAC adapter instead of a 9VDC adapter. This something to consider if you if you want to use it on a pedalboard. I hope it comes with the 12VAC adapter. Otherwise, you will need to buy one. The adapter can be bought online for $10 to $15 plus shipping. Again, this was a very well done video. Unlike other YouTube reviewers, you didn’t waste time trying to be funny or talk too much. You got right down to business. You thoroughly covered the variety of sounds produced by the pedal. Your final evaluation provided useful information.

One thing you can do to reduce the hot signal from the XLR output is to use a XLR-Jack cable. I think that’s the way Koch intended to to be used. That used to work pretty well for me 👍

Great review and playing, thanks.
How do you think this pedal compares to other tube preamps like Effectrode Blackbird, Tubesteader Beekeeper or Kingsley Maiden? Is this a blackface ish preamp?

Is this equivalent to Electro Harmonix English Muffin? The EH English Muffin has 2 real tubes in it

Gain to high gets really muddy, not like a Marshall
