"Nobody can forget the noise of the Quattro... even today, I think we miss this kind of noise." - Michèle Mouton

Prior to this time (1980ish) the only 4wd cars racing were really only in Rallycross, a few garage built VW Beetles with cobbled together systems. There was no Ken Block or drifting, the Audi in WRC Rally was the first time most people ever saw a 4 wheel drive powered, power slide, proper rooster tails coming from all 4 tyres. It was a massive leap at the time it was just huge. The Audi’s had twice the grip to blast out of muddy forest corners and what a soundtrack coming from that 2.1ltr 5cylinder.

Building a car so good that people salivate over it 40 years later

Audi, you lost your roots!

I have attended several rallies, the feeling you get is never captured on camera. Usually a video just shows crowds cheering and a car speeding by, but this video perfectly captures that feeling of awe/disbelief and not being able to process what you just saw coupled with the adrenaline you feel pumping in your veins at that moment.

man there's something beautiful in the raw brutality of group B machines, absolutely amazing cars and crews

It's still a god damn fast car, even by today's standards. It must have been absolutely mind blowing at the time.

The B in Group B stands for brutality. Those cars were just built different.

This is Stig Blomqvist in 1984 at the Sanremo Rally. He later had to give up with engine problems

I saw this footage as a kid.... my dad and brother was watching tv, I wasn't suppose to be awake but i was watching through a crack in the door. Ive always remembered this footage, this was maybe 30 years ago now? Ive seen it since in various rally clips, but thanks for uploading 👍👍

I think this is everybody’s favorite Quattro clip. Because that’s how we all feel watching this fire breathing monster.

Rare footage of a man getting his mind blown. 1984, colourized.

Still more fun to watch than modern WRC.
