Validity and English language tests, part 1 of 4

This video looks at the concept of validity.

Validity is the foundation of what makes a good test. It ensures that an exam is fit for purpose, and a reliable, accurate and fair reflection of a learner’s ability. Validity is about if a test measures what it is meant to measure. There are different aspects of validity that relate to the purpose of a test, who is taking the test, the skills tested, the design of test questions, how the questions are scored and if the test has a positive impact on learning. For example, a valid English language test for university entry will include tasks that reflect what actually happens at university, such as listening to lectures, giving presentations, writing essays, and reading to build understanding across multiple texts.
