Am I right in thinking that the difficulty here is that "j'ai dû" also means "I had to"?

Thanks .Alex, can you tell us sometime why the y in "il y a" is moved around as in "Il a dû y avoir" ..those "stray" y's throw me right off. Is there a rule you can point me to?
