John P. Fischer, MD, Plastic Surgeon and Co-Director of Penn Medicine's Hernia Program describes a complex case treating a patient experiencing large lower abdominal hernia recurrence, post-colectomy.

When he first came in to see me, we spent significant time going through his history and also obtaining all of his previous operable reports to get a better understanding of his unique conditionŠ We also learned a lot about what types of approaches we could offer this patient based on his unique conditions, including his recurring hernia--and the fact that is was below the umbilicus.

Dr. Fischer details the different surgical interventions used, including a mesh placement procedure in the patient's abdomen and use of the "TAR" flap--which lessens the risk of post-operative wound complication, and the patient¹s successful outcome.

Penn Medicine's Hernia Program provides evaluation, diagnosis and advanced surgical care from a dedicated team of physician leaders in the field of hernia repair. Our surgeons and physicians collaborate with other Penn specialists in infectious disease, plastic surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapy and pain management to provide comprehensive care.
