I think all the political and economic philosophers need to start talking to primatologists. Humans are primates. Our economic system (there's really just one), derives from our instinct for organizing around social hierarchies using social status signaling. Wealth is social status signaling. Sometimes it's how many cows you own, sometimes it's what kind of car you drive. The material content of the signal is not important. We draw down far more resources than we actually need because our ability to display excess resources is a social signal of status. You cannot just policy that away. Some animals will always be more equal than others as long as the animals are humans (and chimps, and gorillas, ...).
