Dr. Eric Flisser, Reproductive Endocrinologist and Infertility Specialist at Reproductive Medicine Associates of New York (RMA of New York) in Manhattan and Long Island, discusses the use of ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), and physician guided monitoring with ultrasound, as aids in timing intercourse or insemination.

Transvaginal ultrasound may be used to help predict when ovulation might occur by allowing the physician to view the growth of the ovarian follicle that is to be ovulated.

OPKs are urine tests that can be used at home to help predict ovulation by detecting luteinizing hormone (LH), which triggers ovulation. OPKs will not work well for some women, such as women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or women with longer menstrual cycles.
