Do you have maple trees in your yard? Do you want to make your own syrup? In this series you'll learn how to make your own maple syrup. In this video I'll show you how to prep supplies and collect maple sap to make your own maple syrup.

First thing you'll need is spiles (the taps) I bought mine from Amazon I'll put a link below. Next you'll need buckets, I get mine for free from Walmart. With the trees in my yard, it takes 40 gallons of sap to produce 1 gallon of finished syrup. trees in your area may have require more or less sap.

The sap will go bad if left in a warm area. I keep mine in buckets in the shade and I pack snow around those buckets. Even then I try to evaporate the sap within a few days of collecting it.

So now its just a matter of watching the weather and trying to figure out when the days will be above freezing, and the night will be cold.

Pretty interesting stuff, Dave. I had no idea it took that much sap to make syrup.

That was the coolest video I've seen in a long time! Please make one showing how you turn the sap into syrup! Lol now I want to do this. I only have an elm tree sadly. Big thumbs up! Great great video

Well I watched part one and two out of order. At first I I got kind of excited when you said you can tap red maples. I thought it was just sugar maples. But alas I was broken hearted when you started talking about needing snow to store it and a cold climate to collect it. So I can’t do this, but I learned so much I really enjoyed this syrup series. Looking forward to the third part when you can it.

If I am going to be using 2 taps in one tree, what is the correct spacing between the taps?
