2-4 players. Derp. Anyway, Civ a new dawn is a solid game, and while i say expansions rarely ever fix a game, this one pretty much does. Not that the game was broken or bad to start with, but the expansion does a great job of elevating the core and filling in the gaps in the experience. Also, the designer of Ark Nova needs to buy James Kniffen a beer if they ever meet.

When I first saw you mention this game, I perked up and said "Hey I have that game!" (my collection is small), and you praised the game for being rather good for what it was. This caused me to go back and play it with my wife and we both agreed it was much better than we gave it credit for. We will have to check out this expansion. Thanks!

I played this last night and enjoyed it. Took a bit to wrap my head around which direction to go but the barbarians around everything I had helped. James is a great designer; always happy to see a fellow classmates work.

Definitely agree that the expansion takes this from playable to excellent. The increased asymmetry and exploration stops the feeling of each game playing out the same, just with different city states, a lot of the time with just the base version

We just played this tonight and enjoyed it, but definitely see what you mean by it not being quite a civ game. It's good, especially that card row and how it works. That's awesome! But it just feels like a race to finish the goals. The expansion sounds awesome, so we'll be looking to get that soon.

Need to play it again so I can get the win I deserve. lol. I should have won, but Will made a mad play and had 3 attacks to take over my natural resource, with very low odds of winning, and he got it on his third roll! So we tied and he had one more wonder than I did, so he won by tiebreaker. Dangit! 😛

Have you experienced many tied games?

For a far heavier civilization game try Civ 2010.
There's a player variant for the base game of New Dawn that had exploration.

I really enjoy the action card mechanic with increasing value for unused actions. You mentioned in the video that this mechanic is used in other games. Only other game I know that uses that mechanic is Ark Nova. Are there other games that use this mechanic? Would love to find more of them.

hey Great video I have a question though, can Caravans or the army collect the resources by moving onto them or resources can only be collected by building control tokens on the top? if so would that mean that resources can be only collected if the city is built next to it because the control token can only be placed next to the city, is this correct?

Can you also tell me if a new city has to be built on the place you have an army or caravan two spaces from friendly space, or it can be any empty tile 2 spaces from friendly space? My understanding is army or caravan builds the city!

Fully agree with your take here about this being more of a race in the base game than a proper civ game and the expansion fixes it. Well done.

That said, we found the person who rushed "Flight" in the base game could go on the offensive and wreak havoc to win quickly. That was the base game's real issue. We played easily a dozen games of this and the aggressive player nearly always pushed the end game faster than the turtles could power up unless they got a really advantageous opening position.

As you said, the expac fixes this completely and the game is truly excellent now.

Lastly, expacs for incomplete games (Mostly put out by *cough* Stonemeier *cough*) almost always fix what was broken, but that doesn't mean the game becomes 'good'.
