'Open source' is more than a marketing term!

Why is open source important for 3D printing? Is it still relevant? Do manufacturers understand that it's more than just a marketing term? Only one way to find out!

So according to XYZ, Microsoft is also open source because they allow me to change the desktop background and font size? go figure lol

My opinion of Lulzbot has just skyrocketed after watching this! Massive Kudos.

Also Tom, put that DuetWiFi review near the top of your todo list - this kickass, open source, board needs some love!

Lulzbot is the most insane, open source source company that exists. Those crazy guys sent me the _LAYOUT_ for their warehouse, and helped DeltaMaker figure out inventory management and workflow processes. They are the most impressive 3D printer company I have seen. Even their _current_ development work is placed on a public development server, which is unheard of.

I honestly think this is one of the best videos about this subject. Very well articulated and presented. Interesting how Ultimaker is releasing the files for the UM3.

Excellent content; very important that companies understand and advocate Open Source as a philosophy and ecosystem, not just as public relations jargon.

I can't quite decide if the replies by XYZPrinting count as hilarious comedy or nerve-wracking horror!

Thomas your time and effort on this will without a doubt make this community better. As an engineer its a huge battle to convince executive types that this is a valid business model, and you wont die as a company based on sharing knowledge. Great Video my friend!

I have an open source TV I can adjust the volume AND change the channel!

thank you for bringing this back up Tom, you're always a leader in this community and its great to see not everyone is as 'okay' with so many companies entering this space and pushing the open-source ideas further and further down. excellent video and interviews. (also as if i needed more reason to love E3D, theyre amazing)

XYZ is the perfect Chinese Company, Garbage, proprietary and thief. Ultimaker is slowly moving to Makerbot.... Others like Prusa try to keep their ideals. Excellent video!

Thanks for this view on things open source. Good questions and (well some) good replies.
The guy from E3D summed it up the best for me. He got exited that somebody actually improved on their product.

I give Ultimaker a *lot* of credit for sponsoring and sharing the Cura software. If they want to wait a bit before releasing their new hardware designs, that seems a fair trade-off between giving back and profiting from their design work.

In my opinion ... more than fair. As I use Cura, I directly benefit from Ultimaker giving back to the community. Seems to me they are giving back to the community well in portion to the benefit they received.

Great video and great question choices. XYZ clearly has no idea what open-source means.

I'm always focused on buying open source products, nearly all of my projects are shared under GPL and I actively use the published files to build new stuff an enhance my printers. Open source truly is what made 3d printing as it is today possible and it is also the basis of the future economy in my opinion.

I'm so glad that Sanjay articulated how open source companies can be successful and profitable. Far too many people believe that those two concepts are mutually exclusive.

Props to the giants whose shoulders we're all standing on. Don't forget attribution, and always tick that "share alike" box to keep development racing!

I am super-impressed that Prusa is using openscad and freecad. This a genuinely walking the talk. I have been using freecad for about a year and used it to redesign the inferior hot end on my printer around a GENUINE e3d v6.

I know Tom has mixed feelings about freecad, may I suggest that as it has improved greatly recently in my opinion, that he look at it again on the channel.

XYZ's response was honestly the worst excuse for using 'open source' in marketing I've ever heard. Changing settings? Oh gee! Call up stratasys, we got a true original groundbreaking innovation here!!!😬

Asking Joseph prusa whether he is open source or not is like asking Stephen hawking whether he’s a scientist😂😂😂😂

I am glad Duet3D finally get some attention, IMHO best board i ever had, great community and support. What a differance with RADDS V1.5. if you looking for a 32bit board.
Nice one, Tom

That was actually far more informative about the state of things than I'd expected. Thanks for yet more quality content.

And thanks for leaving XYZ in there as a point of just how badly a company can understand a core concept of their atmosphere. Hopefully others entering the field will set their benchmarks higher.
