I'm gonna use "We can blame the Romans" everytime someone asks "why?"

This definitely deserves to be its own video and not just a short. There is a lot of interesting history involved in our calendar

February is the only month with the correct number of days. make every month have 28 days, add a 13th month, 364 days, just 1.24 short of a full year, make New Years Day it's own thing and marvel at the beauty of the perfect calendar.

For "why not 13X28", Caesar was semi-inspired by an Egyptian 12X30 calendar (he spent a year in Egypt with Cleopatra) and so was merging that version with the Roman version and then correcting the 5 day offset between the 365 and 360 numbers.

Why did he leave Feb shorter? Because February was an unlucky month in Roman superstitions so he kept it at is original length.

I love the way Be Smart shorts loop from the end to beginning so seamlessly!

The only thing that really makes sense is, 13 months of 28 days each (4 weeks in a month, 364 days a year!) and an extra day at the end/ beginning for new year celebrations. Every four years, there are two days for celebration to incorporate the leap year extra day.

Worth noting that Numa was an ancient legendary king and whether or not he actually existed or what he specifically did is up for debate

Could you imagine living in a time when someone could just completely change the calander on everyone out of nowhere? Suddenly the months are in a different order, they create new months, the length of months changes, winter is now in the summer months and summer is in the winter months. Must have been chaos getting used to that lol.

What I heard, when Julius Caesar made that calendar, Feb had 30-31 days, while July and August had only 30 each. Caesar then named July after himself, took a day from Feb because his month couldn't have only 30 days. Years later, Octavian August named a month after himself, and also took a day from February

There's a good story about that: during the Civil War between Ceasars and Pompeii, it had fallen to Caesar to adjust the calendar cuz he was Consul, but he didn't have time cuz he was busy campaigning. In late October the Med has violent storms, so the Pompeiians weren't expecting a sea attack, but Caesar knew it wasn't really late October yet, so he was able to successfully sneak attack and win the war. One of his first edicts as emperor was creating a calendar that self-regulated, thus the Ceasarian Calendar was created.

And why did we never make 13 28-day months instead? We'd only need 1 or 2 extra days depending on the leap year. Bring on Sol!

We can properly use a 28 month year and get a extra month, expect the leap year, we can just have a festival that day

I actually learned about the Romans inventing the calendar when I was in grade 2 or 3, just a sweet young thing back then. Can’t tell you how many times I recite “30 days have September, April, June and November. All the rest have 31 except February, which has 28, or 29 on a leap year”. It’s stuck in my head forever. I have a friend born on February 29th. Just sent him a card celebrating his 5th birthday. He’s a grandfather now.

Until this very video I never actually realized how very much close Hungarian kept the names of the months to those of the Romans.
