If these laws were applied to all equally. Imagine how many corporate CEOS, judges, and US politicians would fall in prison. Pitty they are protected.

Japan killed the yakuza by a different means. They made it illegal for anyone involved (or their families) to have bank accounts or own property. Yakuza gangs are now a bunch of old men because nobody young wants to join for life, which isn't much of one. Their influence over Japan's society is fading.

There is a dark side to this law. The government and corporations can use it to bust unions and other NGOs by implicating a few members with crimes.

The reason Sammie the Bull turned on his boss is because his boss talked about Sammie's crimes on a wire. You aren't supposed to do this since wires could be anywhere. So they arrested Sammie. Calling him a rat is a bit of a stretch since he had really good reason to turn evidence on his boss.

With the intro of the business fronts I was reminded of the story of another Mafia family that had a pizza joint as a front, but it did so well that it became the legitimate business for the family.

I love how the prohibition of alcohol proves that the prohibition of all drugs doesn't work yet we still refuse to change laws.

According to one rumor I heard, Al Capone had a set of simple rules: Bribe Them (cops, DAs, Judges), if that doesn't work Intimidate Them, if that doesn't work "Hope For Better Luck With Their Replacement".

The idea of charging people for crimes they weren't a part of seems crazy dangerous to me...

They aren’t gone, they just aren’t what they used to be in terms of influence in most parts of the country.

“One simple law”, i.e. a sweeping congressional act that fundamentally changed the landscape of law enforcement and prosecution

It's interesting that while Brazil got even more Italian immigrants relative to population (1, 4 million between 1870 and 1920 to a population of 30 million in 1920, while US got 4 million until 1920 to a population of 105 million by 1920.), the Italian Mafia never developed here, because Italian immigrants to Brazil came mostly from the Italian North... Veneto, Lombardia, etc
