I refer you to Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary (1961), which is consistent with the way it was taught in the 50's and 60's in the United States. Of course, changes occur over time, and that could be one of them. For example, when I was in school, the 'e' in 'era' was pronounced long. Now I notice the more recent edition of Webster's Collegiate permits either the long or short 'e'.

Hi, it was prohibited for us to pronounce the 't' in th word 'often' in the school, is it old-fashioned? The same is at 'debt' - here the 'b' was silent.
And what about 'rarely', 'seldom'???
