2022 Toyota Prius / Lose Your Ego

The Prius is a unique car with a lot to give if you can get past the image that's associated with one. Compared to the Honda Insight and Hyundai Ionic Hybrid, it loses in many categories, however, I think this still has a grasp on a big portion of the market for several reasons.

Thank you Royal South Toyota for loaning me the Prius for this review!

One correction here that I verified with the owners manual just now. The B mode is not regenerative braking but just engine braking for steep declines! It won't feed the motor anymore than usual. I was told it was regenerative braking awhile ago and never really questioned it, my apologies.

Your subtitle "Lose Your Ego" says it all.
I've owned everything from 60's muscle cars to full size pickups used to tow my 5th wheel camper and my 2015 Prius, bought during the Covid Pandemic with the cash from the sale of my HD truck & camper, , is without question the best car I've ever owned.
Did it take getting used to? Absolutely, put it in "Power Mode" and it's quite peppy.
Do I take crap from all my friends ? You bet, but I quit caring what people think a long time ago.
I recently took it on a multi month, 8, 600 mi. trip around the US from Fl to upstate NY to CA and back, and it didn't miss a beat..
And I saved thousands in gas & motel bills by camping in the "Class P" while enjoying perfect climate control. 🙂

I love my 2012... It just works, and costs next to nothing to own and operate. Saves money for motorcycles and trips.

I'm an ex Toyota Tech, since retired and I'm on my fourth Prius with over 1.2 million kms between them. All have been brilliant, reliable and extremely cheap to own and run in every sense. I now own a 2012 plug-in JDM import...same as the others, great car. I almost bought the new model same as the one you reviewed, but deferred until the Gen 5 is released. The things just don't break...and return factory fuel figures well into several hundred thousand. You WILL replace a battery if you keep one long enough, is what it is. 10.5 years is the median failure age, total mileage not so relevant. As for the B mode, with the exception fo the plug-in versions that increase actual regen in EV mode if B is selected, all other standard hybrids simply divert the excess energy by spinning, (not firing) the engine to give the sensation of down shifting on long descents. You are better to lightly touch the brakes, just enough to trigger the brake lights and this achieves maximum regen. B mode will be triggered in the event that the battery is full on a long descent anyway, when the battery is full and there's nowhere for the excess energy to go. Personally I never use it, never have despite living in a mountainous area.

What a great comprehensive review of a car near the end of its cycle. I’ve been looking at 1 and 2 year old Prius's and found them to be endearing. This is coming from a auto enthusiast who loves power. I test drove the Prius not expecting much, and when you factor what they are suppose to be as a gas saving reliable car, I thought it was a real decent drive. Thanks for the real honest review!

with the current gas prices, people with trucks will be crying at the gas pump.

Maybe it‘s my age, but recently I’ve been admiring the practicality, looks, and reliabilty of the Prius 😂

I've owned about 8 brand new vehicles, and 10 used ones in my 40 years of driving, and the most functional, and economical car I've ever owned, was my 2019 Prius LE. So when that got stolen and destroyed a few weeks ago, I went straight out and bought another, without a second thought. If I had all kinds of $$$, I'd buy a RAV4 Hybrid as a second / backup vehicle. But their is nothing else on the market Id even consider for my primary daily driver. BTW, I also make a living with my Prius, and I do cross country trips. Car camping with all night climate control is the best ! :) Love LOVE my Prius :) My new XLE does have the sunroof, and its not that I thought I had to have it, but rather, the one I was able to get, just happened to have it > and its freaking awesome :) Honestly, I wasn't even looking for an XLE, but Im glad I had my arm twisted, as I really like all the upgrades.

You hit the nail on the head. I want family transportation but not an suv. Also the cargo area is as big as some small suvs and the obvious gas savings.

I think the fact that the Prius came out 7 years ago is a plus / benefit. New cars with lots more technology, bigger screens, sensors, etc. they just feel worse and they seem dater quicker. All brands now have digital dashes and most of them suck. I think we are right in a moment where these “simple” cars will disappear and we will only have touch screens for everything. The limited trim screen sucks, it ruins the whole car.

I just turned in my 22 Honda Civic Hatchback lease in early and bought a 2019 Toyota Prius Limited. I loved the looks of the Civic but it broke down on me 3 times and when my tank was full my range never went over 300 miles. Now when my Prius is filled I’m over 600 miles! So much better and way more comfortable.

I don’t have an EGO. But i saved allot of money by driving a Prius.. money that I normally lost by driving other cars.
Reliability is money. Cheap on gas is also money. And driving long enough in a car that’s reliable and cheap on gas. Saves allot of money. I drive my prius 5 and a half year now. And i never had any repair costs. Just the regular maintenance at the Toyota dealer. Oil and oil filter and Hybrid check. My fuell consumption is 4, 2L per 100 km every day . I bought this prius when it was 4 years old for €10.000 now 5 and a half year later with this ridiculous used car prices i can get the same price for it. The prius payed it self back. And it never gave me stress. Yes people have comments about my prius. But I don’t care . Those people saw more repair costs than me

I test drove a 2019 white Prius. It was a 100 degrees that day. The air conditioning was freaken cold. To this day I still think about that car. I didn’t buy it because I was close to paying off my current vehicle and the insurance was going to be $100 more than what I paid for my current vehicle. It just wasn’t going to be a good buy for me. And now that I think about it why am I watching this video. I love not having a car payment!!

Very nice car indeed. Sad that Toyota never updated Prius V. I heard a lot of Japanese complained to Toyota.

I just bought a pretty much brand new 24 Prius XLE Prime. And I love it yes, family members have called me gay and a tree hugger. But I’m left with the last laugh while they’re getting no where close to to the fuel economy I’m getting. I have no regrets and I still kept my old 06 Tacoma. So I still have a truck.

Really loving the Prius and Subaru Crosstrek/Impreza, (currently looking at both) I don’t mind the Prius look, tbh it looks just fine, my only worry is I drove a 2005 or 2007 model and visibility in that thing was awful, it felt like I was boxed in and heavily relied on the side mirrors which felt like no help, it was my dads car at the time and I hated driving it for that reason, hope to test drive this years current model and see if anything has changed in terms of visibility

My guess as to why it had the AWD badge, is likely it was damaged in the rear during shipment. The replacement badges where from the AWD model.
