Ruby has been bottling up her emotions and smiling through her pain from the start. She was the only member of team RWBY who never talked about her past. In volume 4 and 5, everyone worked through the trauma they experienced and learned about themselves. Everyone except Ruby. Ruby smiled through it all. She doesn't show her pain to others. The Red Like Roses manga shows a scene where a teenage Ruby breaks down in front of her mother's grave, which suggests she never got over her mother's death. She wants to be strong like the heroes in the books, so she smiles through it all. When Ruby broke down near the end of volume 7, I think it signified an important character arc for Ruby that will happen soon.
Ruby is a lot more complex than she appears on the surface...that sad smile kills me every time.

Sometimes I listen to these songs and wonder how the hell anyone thought this show was gonna be cheerful happy go lucky stuff from start to finish. It's great!

i find it kinda intresting how the characters thoughts are more put through in the their songs lyrics, for example rubys happy go lucky nature and innocence but deep down shes really broken and understands a lot more then people give her credit for, even so she going anyway trying not to show the cracks, i find this really really interesting from a character perspective :'3 anyone else agree?
