As an Arabian owner - THANK Thank you for calling out how absolutely disgusting the exotic Arabian breeders are! Too many people do not acknowledge how abusive and irresponsible this type of breeding is 🙏🏻 this is such an amazing breed and they have become unrecognizable from what they began as- which was a sturdy and well built horse that was perfect the way they were

The number of times over the years that I have had people ask me if my Arabian is part quarter horse is astounding. No, he's an actual functionally bred Arabian horse. He just has good bone and muscle and a slightly dished face that is indicative of his breed. He's an Arabian that was bred to be a hardy performance horse with good endurance, not a delicate air gasping monstrosity.

Normally, after a surgery, a dog would try to get the oxygen/gas tube out of their nose because it's extremely uncomfortable, but brachycephalic dogs like to have it in because it's so much easier for them to breathe, which shows just how uncomfortable they usually are. :( This is so sad and great that you are touching on this subject <3

This happens a lot with fish, too. Betta fish and Goldfish are the most abused fish out of all species and are also selectively bred to hell. Some Betta fish can't even swim because of how big their fins are through selective breeding and lead tiring and short lives. And there are some downright gross looking Goldfish breeds, like Bubble-eye Goldfish, which have huge sacs under their eyes that can easily pop and become infected or Celestial Eye Goldfish, that can't even see because their eyes are facing up. Most people don't really care about fish and treat them like they aren't living things, when they are, and it hurts my heart to see.

As someone with a deviated septum who can barely breathe out of one of my nostrils, I agree with you it's cruel. Doing endurance exercise has always been difficult for me because I can only breathe through my mouth, otherwise I feel like I can't get enough air in. I feel bad for animals who adore physical activity like horses and dogs but can't get exercise because of how they were bred.

This topic sadly isn't talked about enough. I've been having the same frustration w/ selective breeding of animals, & how delusional & selfish ppl are

My first reaction is "he's deformed". I think I've seen this referred to as a seahorse head/face. It's stupid when the Arabian breed is known for stamina, & you breed for something that will diminish that.

Another point for the folks saying that it isn't all that bad. Since he's not an endurance arabian just a halter arabian... First and foremost this arabian is a horse. It's natural for horses to make miles, stretch their legs, run, buck, frolic and play. An obstructive airway infringes on that. Being able to act and express natural behaviour is part of animal welfare. It's so cruel to have animals fight for their breaths because of our silly "beauty" standards.

I am a small breeder (not a back yard breeder), of Arabians. I'm glad you addressed this subject, Raleigh. I have had some outright arguments caused by my speaking out on this subject. I don't like calling it as selective breeding, because a good breeder should be selective to make sure that they are not breeding deformities or health issues.
This trend is mostly through a group of of owners that got it into their feeble minds to breed "Living Art." It was the stupidest thing ever to take horses known for their superior ability in endurance and strength and distort the characteristics that made them the horse that improved most other light breeds. It's completely asinine. Arabians are known for longevity, and I guarantee that these horses that have been bred for exaggerated traits won't live long lives and the lives they have will be miserable. I am very selective with what I breed, because I breed old lines to preserve the Arabian horse in it's original form. The Arabian head is beautiful and recognized in it's proper form. I agree with you that breeders purposely breed traits that over exaggerate should be banned. And judges should be kicking them out of the show ring, not celebrating them.

It's a topic that really needs to get talked about. In particular, it's become way too widely accepted for dogs to be this way for cuteness. My dad had a purebred bull dog who ended up going into cardiac arrest and died because she got too excited and ran around after a long road trip. She was a trucker dog, so she was used to long rides too... And hardly anyone knows about the pain that Scottish fold cats have, I'm glad you mentioned it here.

Thank you for calling out this “designer breeding”. I used to work for an Arabian breeder and was horrified at the physically, mentally and and functionally impaired horses they produced in their myopic desire to produce caricatures rather than healthy, natural offspring.
I’m so sorry for this little colt and all the other animals we humans mutilate to satisfy some humans sick desire for aesthetics.

I remember the first time I saw a post about that horse. The poster was saying how "gorgeous" he was and how they would love to have a horse like him.
And so many people were agreeing, i was sitting wondering who's nightmare that horse was spawned from

A very strange thing when you see pictures of ancient Arabian horses and how they differ from the current horses We have it in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Endurance races We consider head arching to be a fatal flaw in endurance Also, our Arabian horses that achieve endurance have long straight faces

I appreciate you calling this out! I've never been a horse owner, but I have loved Arabians as a breed since reading King of the Wind, and the Black Stallion books. Recently I have noticed that these horses have become caricatures of themselves. I actually wondered if I was the only one noticing the exaggerated dished face of modern Arabians. I am no judge of conformation, but it doesn't look good to me. I hope American breeders will take notice of this issue, and allow their Arabians to breathe!

Been screaming about this a long while now xC Arabians are now and have always been my fav breed. I obsessed over the stories of Godolphin and that entire bloodline.

Arabian horses are endurance horses, bred to survive in inhospitable conditions and move quickly across sandy and rocky terrains. A boasting point is wide, flared nostrils, slight dishing, and well sprung ribs for maximum lung inflation.

Turning them into a fkng Pug is a nightmare I can't get out of it. I feel like the Arabian Quarterly magazine I feel had a large part of creating the breeding trends for bracycephalic heads.

It's a nightmare. It is abuse. It is downright criminal.

I have been screaming about this as a vet tech for decades, German shepherds and sloped back so bad the hip dysplasia is almost gaurunteed, the poor bull dogs can't give birth to there puppies because of the size of there heads ....the list just goes on....preach it sister

Worth noting that there are brachycephalic RABBITS, too. Lopped breeds with the "cute" little round heads are brachys. Healthy rabbit head shape is more elongated with upright ears, and not enough people are talking about this.

My mum has a pug and his constant struggles to just breathe actually break my heart. It’s awful. I don’t understand why we would “create” an animal that can’t even ffing breathe like what is wrong with humanity 😭
Thank you for talking about this. I think any normal & empathetic animal lover would agree with everything you said.

I recently lost my black, Egyptian mare. A granddaughter of Saud el Ameer. She was short, stocky and had a gentle dish to her face. Like another poster said, I was CONSTANTLY asked if she was a part Arab. But no. She was a healthy, ornery, little spitfire with astonishing endurance and a knack for working cattle. She made it to 21 until she colicked due to a tumor in her intestine. She will always be my heart horse.

The first time I ever saw a picture of this particular horse I thought it was deformed or had a drastic accident. There is nothing even remotely desirable in the looks of this animal/horse. It was later that some of my horse owner friends told me this is becoming a preferred standard among Arabian horses. Total madness.
Apparently they are also changing the preferred standard among Quarter horses too, making them also look totally hideous. Thank you for calling this out, there are many who agree with you on this.
