The family of Oei Tang Ham opened the House Of Tugu and dedicated it the the families patriarch. The title “Sugar King of Indonesia” is most commonly associated with Oei Tiong Ham, a Chinese-Indonesian businessman who became one of the wealthiest individuals in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He earned the title due to his immense success in the sugar industry, where he controlled a significant portion of sugar production in the region. His business empire expanded beyond sugar and into sectors like banking and plantations, positioning him as a key figure in Southeast Asia’s economic development during the colonial era.

Oei Tiong Ham’s influence extended into both the business and cultural spheres, as he was also a well-known figure in the Chinese-Indonesian community, contributing to the development of Peranakan culture. However, like many wealthy figures of the time, his legacy is complicated by his involvement in industries such as opium trade, which played a role in his vast fortune.

Oei Tiong Ham was not the founder of Peranakan culture, but he was a prominent figure within the Peranakan Chinese community. Peranakan culture, a unique blend of Chinese and local Southeast Asian traditions, developed over centuries as Chinese immigrants, particularly from southern China, settled in parts of Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. This culture is known for its distinctive language (known as Baba Malay or Peranakan Malay), clothing, food, and customs.

Peranakan culture itself has roots that date back to the 15th century when Chinese traders and settlers began intermarrying with local Malays and other Southeast Asian ethnic groups. Oei Tiong Ham, as a successful Chinese businessman in Indonesia, contributed to the prosperity of the Peranakan Chinese community, but he did not create the culture. His wealth and influence allowed him to help elevate the status of Chinese-Indonesians and their contributions to local society.
