A202 Queens Road Peckham redesign

I suppose this is part of the work towards "Cycle Superhighway 5". What a load of tosh. I believe that none of this road design would be regarded as even slightly competent in the Netherlands. I feel quite angry that TfL think this sort of sub-standard work is at all acceptable.

The vanishing cycle lane just before the pinch point is a no brainer of the highest level.

Will have to get some videos up of some of the recent work done near me, got a straight ahead lane that suddenly turns in to a right turn only lane right before the junction, then a nice 3-4ft wide cycle path going along the side that narrows to the width of my handle bars to go under a bridge around a blind corner, then there's the county being turned in to a rally track ;)

I'm a Dutch Kiwi living in Japan. The roads are even narrower here, and the traffic more congested, but the attitude of drivers is much less aggressive. I know where I would rather cycle (hint: I'm not searching for a cheap flight out).

Granted there's a 'limited space' issue in redesigning city roads, but you're absolutely right - a lot of that looks to be a case of "what are we going to do with this spare can of white paint?". That's going to cause frustration for drivers and dangerous passes on cyclists.

It would be interesting to see how many 'white lines' were noted as contributing factors to the deaths and serious injury of cyclists - and then it would be interesting to see someone take councils to the high court over it.

There are so few places in Britain where cyclists want to go where there is space for a cycle lane. If there is no space, don't install one as it creates more problems than it solves.

The main issue for Govt. to tackle is how to change driver attitudes so that sharing the road is not a lottery of WHEN you are going to meet the psycho (Typical exchange - "Why did you cut me up?" "Because you look like a twat").

Totally agree Mikey. we get the same sort of crap 'improvements' here in Australia, which the 'advocacy' groups (paid by government!) applaud, and no cyclist uses. Drivers see it as a waste of money too. Bad infrastructure is worse than none, but the solution isn't 'none', it is to do it properly!!

Make the pavement smaller that's not much pedestrian use and make cycle lane bigger?

Bit of a silly design, a simple Bicycle icon would be better judging how narrow the road is :( but I'm still jealous you get new tarmac, if thats your normal route to and from home :o) My wheels are going to fall off soon if they don't do anything to the roads around mine (mainly everywhere in Westminster) :(

I agree with Ian: the main issue is changing driver attitudes, massively reducing the sense of entitlement. These markings are just a waste of paint and labor (and a source of embarrassment for TfL).

Your road tax would have paid for none of these changes, mostly because road tax doesn't exist. Did you mean VED? That is a pollution tax, fool.

Secondly, everyone who pays income and council tax, and I've paid a lot of tax, contributes to the cost of the roads. You should also be complaining at these substandard farcilities, because it's a waste of money.

yeah they redesigned orpington tesco's roundabout now... stupid stupid... i got taught to drive to stay left lane unless lane says otherwise... suddenly im stuck with straight ahead now in the right lane, with no lane to follow round... ah go down and check it out you see what I mean lol, stupid redesign that wasnt needed...
