(Star Wars) Darth Maul - One Last Lesson

Maul | Identity

This was a love letter to The Clone Wars and an analysis I wanted to complete following the finale of Season 7. Maul's character arc was so unique and appropriate for the events of the Clone Wars, and he really became a microcosm of the audience's experiences during the Prequel Saga. I hope you enjoy this tribute to Darth Maul.

I came back to view this again and noticed I forgot to "Like". I guess the video, when I first viewed it, left me speechless. When I first viewed that scene with Ashoka and Maul and uttered that all of Ashoka's life, all her training, all her grief, all came down to this meeting. It physically made my spine shiver and made me jump up and utter "OMG Your so right". This second viewing made me aware that Maul's resurrection was also meant for just this meeting, making this probably the most important scene in SW. Just think what could have occurred if Ashoka reconsidered, but Ashoka's faith in Anakin prevented Wonderful video, powerful again even after my first viewing 8 months ago. Maul's fate is sealed, now we await Dave to give us Ashok's story going forward. Hopefully, you'll do a video on her.

In reality he was a complete victim.

He was only ever used, even by his master.

He was never meant to be his apprentice only a simple Sith assassin.

When he later meets Ezra, you do see a real bond between them, maybe
Maul could relate to him because Ezra himself had been abandoned and left like a leaf in the wind much like himself.

Holy hell, what an amazing articulation of Maul's character! You word it all so poetically.

Something else that plays into the disassociation of his character is that Maul is someone we have already seen "die" twice, yet his presence and consciousness keeps coming back in other scenarios of the timeline. If we go by release order, an audience has already seen Maul killed in Episode I, but he returns in Clone Wars. The audience has then seen Maul definitively killed by Obi-wan in Rebels, yet he shows up again in Solo as a crime boss, and he shows up AGAIN as a main threat in the finale of Clone Wars. Even Obi-wan remarks that he killed Maul once, but Maul doesn't seem to stay dead. For me, this just feeds into the chaos of who he is. A wildcard that can narratively still create chaos in the continuing Star Wars stories being told, but is ultimately powerless to change his or his galaxy's inevitable fate. Of course, a lot of this is the same for many characters in Star Wars as most of the timeline is told out of order, but something about it all works exceptionally well for Maul. Seeing the lengths he goes through to escape in the ending of Clone Wars (all after failing to prevent Palpatine's plan) is made that much sadder with the knowledge that he'll eventually die a lonely death in the middle of the desert on a backwater planet in the arms of his enemy... a death for which he has nothing to blame but his own relentless pursuit of revenge. After Episode I, he was never really on anything but borrowed time.

He was resurrected but it's almost like everyone around him knew he was supposed to be dead. No matter what he did, nothing could stick, he was lost to irrelevance even as he flailed against it.

The mad struggle of a pawn who is already dead since decades ago but refuses to acknowledge it.

Maul is probably one of the most tragic characters in all of star wars.
(Though your part about ancient religions, ironically the problem here was that the jedi had strayed from the initial ancient intentions of the jedi rules, we can see this when we look at qui-gonn who was probably the only Jedi who through all of his study had a good understanding of what a Jedi was supposed to be and also wasn't naive and would have recognized palpatine as a sith lord far earlier whereas all the other Jedi remain pretty blind for the entire clone war.
Qui-gonn is also a Jedi that realizes that being emotionally connected to someone isn't something you should avoid at all cost like the other Jedi thought it was. Qui-gonn would have helped Anakin with his emotions rather then tell him he shouldn't have them.)

Maul has the saddest character arch. He had greatness right in front of him but every aspect of his life fell apart always.

I love Maul, honestly he became my favorite Star Wars character and it says a lot when in the phantom menace I thought he was nothing more then just a sith guy who looks cool and has a good fight, but now he’s something very special, with very memorable lines, the ICONIC Kenobi scream, and an incredible death

What I find amazing about this video is that it goes to show how good of a character moment Maul had. The fact that in the middle of a summery, it pauses to just allow the scene to play out, and it speaks volume in a way that is somewhat hard to describe. Maul in this final season was truly one of the most impactful and interesting characters to be given the spotlight, and he planted the seed of worry well.

this is a beautiful explanation of Maul's purpose. I loved his character and to see his whole arc over all these shows and movies, made him that much better.

That’s a very interesting take. Starting to see why Maul is so disturbing in his final arc and yet we get his struggle and he gets our empathy right until his demise in rebels. Maul is us, adults and first hour Star Wars lovers, facing the dark future of disney’s evil plan, knowing the galaxy is doomed, filled with anger to the point of paranoia. Finally hoping to die in peace, in the arms of our strongest connection to our past, Obi Wan himself. Great job with this vids
