9.3 Poisson Regression Connection To Poisson Distribution and Odds Ratios

This video makes connections to material typically covered in intro statistics courses. First, I review the poisson process which gives rise to the poisson probability distribution. I then demonstrate how we can use Poisson regression to estimate the rate at which events are occurring (which is assumed to be know in the poisson distribution). I also talk about how the poisson regression model can be used to estimate a rate ratio (RR) adjusted for other variables.

These videos support a course I teach at The University of British Columbia (SPPH 500), which covers the use of regression models in Health Research. These videos were put together to use for remote teaching in response to COVID.

Your videos have almost always 0 dislikes, and I think it goes to show how good you are as a presenter of difficult content. Thank you for all these lectures!

Thanks. It was truly useful to get the concept.

Hi. I would like to ask a question. We are treating the mean of the Poisson random variable as the rate (which is the parameter for the Poisson Process ). Does this imply that we assume this Poisson random variable describes the number of occurs in a unit time rather than other specific t?
