Earthquakes near New Zealand prompt tsunami warning and evacuations lasting several hours

New Zealand issued a national tsunami warning after three major earthquakes struck off the east coast of the country’s North Island in the early hours of March 5, 2021. The largest quake measured at a magnitude of 8.1 was followed by several others including two at magnitude 7.2 and 7.4. People living in areas along the east coast on the country’s North Island were warned to “move immediately”. The National Emergency Management Agency encouraged people to find higher ground and move inland. The warnings were lifted after the largest waves passed later in the morning.

Naw, it was lifted after about 10 hours from initial evacuation (which was around 3 a.m.) when the initial waves were calculated to be over. And we only had a tiny surge so at least it wasn't as bad as they thought it to be, maybe because the epicenter was far off and there is the Great Barrier Island in between which demonstrated to us why it got its name. Great response from the government though, and people were compliant at least. 😉 fingers crossed that will be the last one for a while.

It's a bit calmer when the epicenter isn't near the coastline. At my place if it strikes, we only got 30 minutes to evacuate.
