Nintendo's Impact On Android Emulation & Retro Releases on Switch & PS5

This week in retro gaming, the main news has been around the impact that Nintendo's takedown of the Switch emulator Yuzu has had on the emulation scene in general.

A lot of emulators are now deciding to remove themselves from the Google Play Store due to the threat of legal action from Nintendo and potentially other platform holder being taken against them and certain emulators have halted development completely across every platform.

Meanwhile, Nintendo and PlayStation are slowly adding to their online libraries of digital games, which almost feels like a bit of a slap in the face considering the emulation landscape isn't looking too great right now.

I can understand not wanting emulation of your current generation platform but if you're not even selling it anymore just let people have it.

Nintendo's aggressive litigation has led to a chilling effect on the emulation scene, just as they intended.

The company's do know people could just download them before they're removed and pass them out via Google Drive and USB right? I feel like they're wasting their time.

Wow who wouldve guessed that big company takes action gives every other company precedent to nuke all emulators from orbit

I think we need a lawsuit to protect gamers rights with online purchases cause as of now I could pay for them and in a year they take them right back off the store.

No duckstation and AetherSx2 were removed because the developer decided to remove them because of people harassing him

And Duckstation is now back on the Play Store and got an update "preparations for future updates" on sept 30

nintendo can literally pull a big power move by supporting emulation. That would lead them onto developing a new cpu or gpu capable of self-clocking itself for full backwards compatibility at 60fps

Emulation is online, it's never going away. Lawsuits be damned there are passionate people out there that will make sure the emulators continue to be developed and improved. If Nintendo or sony had any sense about them they'd reach out and offer these people jobs. Not threatening them with lawsuits.

To be honest Nintendo needs to figure out a way to monetize emulation. As much as that sucks for us, this is a losing battle for them. Emulation isn’t going anywhere and they’ll just have to keep endlessly fighting new iterations of emulation.

I can understand the switch emulation part.. but not the ones Nintendo have dropped support for.

A nice middle ground would be protecting against emulators for a current or previous system, but any before that being permissable. Then Nintendo could stop whining.

If only emulator users themselves stop posting videos of unreleased videogames from Nintendo. Then we would not have this problem, but hey clout is hell of a drug, and i noticed some of the members of the emulator communities do not understand that posting videos of unreleased videogames is piracy and they are even defending that shit.

Ive downloaded EVERY Nintendo game possible. 8tb worth of space can do that very easily. Nintendo already lost.

Emulation will never die. Dont be concerned with Nintendos bullying. Theyre just butt hurt.

AetherSX2 has been gone long before this situation. The dev just got tired of being called out for being rude with his closed source pcsx2 fork.

Why are people getting upset at Nintendo for taking down Switch emulators? I feel it's wrong to emulate current consoles. If they're not selling those games anymore, I think it's fine.
