In sociology, multiculturalism is the view that cultural differences should be respected or even encouraged. Sociologists use the concept of multiculturalism to describe one way of approaching cultural diversity within a society. Underlying multiculturalism is the belief that members of different cultures can live peacefully alongside each other; assimilation is not necessary, nor perhaps even desirable. Contrasted with multiculturalism is the "melting pot" perspective, according to which cultural differences — such as differences in religion, language, and other customs — blend into another to form a new whole. Proponents of multiculturalism favor people keeping at least some features of their traditional culture. The United States has often been described as a multicultural nation. Critics claim that multiculturalism threatens social unity and the dominant culture.

Polyculturalism seems so much more enlightened than multiculturalism, don't you think? If my country got that instead, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be feeling like I'm now living against my will as a foreign minority in the ethnic enclave that has since become of my own hometown.

Do you consider any limit into embracing foreign cultures into so called western culture? Is there any red line and say no way, we cannot let you do this/these in our country? Is there or it is kind of liberal way of whatever comes in we accept? in some cultures having multiple wife's (both permanent and temporary) is acceptable, in some cultures executing gays is a blessing, in some cultures cutting fingers, hands, arms, feet, legs of thieves is a lawful things to do. There are so many of these multicultural customs out there, are we adopting some of those too or we have some sort of mechanism to enforce our cultural stuff into the new comers, telling them you should leave some of your multicultural stuff behind, you are allowed to practice the ones we only authorize. is that right?
