Today's radio broadcast was a disaster and far below the standard of the Met. Mr. Skelton was in no shape to sing the role of Otello. Ms. Yoncheva sounded dreadfully flat when you could determine any pitch through her wobble. Mr. Dudamel's conducting must have been hard to follow because the ensembles were all over the place. Mary Jo and Ira avoided any comment at all about the singing itself today. The love duet at the end of act one received only tepid, barely polite applause. I think many in the audience were shocked at the quality of the performance they paid to see.

Based on what we are hearing in today’s broadcast this qualifies as a trainwreck. Imagine an Otello without an Otello. That's what we are hearing from Stuart Skelton. MIA. Then imagine an Otello with an overparted Desdemona. That's what we are hearing from Sonya Yoncheva, so young and already in tatters. Finally, also MIA is Gustavo Dudamel who appears to be directing congested LA traffic and not anything remotely musical or interesting or that makes one pay attention. In other words, an apprentice or a routinier. No more, perhaps even less.
