I see a problem with debates. Debates are often used to control a narrative. It invites people to choose one of only two sides. Often there are many sides to an argument and the more creative responses get filtered out this way. Third and forth views become habitually ignored. It keeps people in a box when what is needed is to look outside the box.

Debates are about founding the common truth not about disagreeing. Often times debates are not seen as that but as a game to win, regardless of what the actual truth is. It’s because we attach our egos and identities to the side we debate on. If we can remove the self then I think we can start to have productive debates

People think that debate= argument and although this can happen, that's not the point. The point is to arrive at a consensus of fact/logic that is indisputable.

Debates should be used to find the truth

Debate is putting your argument across. Problem solving is understanding why your opponent feels the way they do and then action being taken in such a way as both sides feelings being acknowledged.

Dialogue... by proper inquiry, proper investigation that all disagreement psychologically is based on Fear, False evidence appearing real...
Why use debate, a tool of the egocentric, or any form of disagreement, when open minded Dialogue can show us the reality of our behaviours.

The title is stating a bias towards Debates, yet if we are being taught that we are doing Debates inadequately, then the title is more wrong than correct.

Debates are only useful if the debaters are not looking to "win" and the host of the debate plays devil's advocate. Most people are bad at debate and think EVERY view must be contrary to their opponent. Good debaters can play both sides of the argument well as very few people are comfortable thinking there are legitimate counter arguments.

But what's the point of debate when you don't have the power to make a change? For this reason I think debating in colleges and high schools are pointless because it isn't necessary that those people will become policymakers or changemakers.

I would demur. All one accomplishes if debate is occurring while the opposing sides are not rooted in the same understanding of facts and evidence = is "quibbling" - which accomplishes nothing.

Ergo what is desperately needed is to first = get people on the same page vis a vis what constitutes credible facts and evidence. Only then can a discussion move forward to some resolution.

p.s. - society is fractured specifically because of people claiming their own purported "facts" online all screeching at each other.

So one absolutely should listen to what is being said. Yet "debate" as an abstract concept is actually counterproductive in most cases as it simply encourages that fabrication of what are subjective points of argument. A plumber can certainly try to debate a neurosurgeon if they want = but they have no real basis of understanding from which to do
