A Dark Moment For Esports

One of the darker moments in esports this year has just gotten worse.

On top of the alleged unpaid salaries, a criminal trial, and generally mismanaging their many teams, BLEED Esports allegedly left their Mobile Legends Bang Bang roster stranded in Singapore without any plane tickets home.

It's about time that something like this happened in a highly under-regulated industry. As sad as it is for this to happen to the players and coaches etc, it'll be good in the long run for the industry.

Contact Mikoto from Talon Esports' Dota 2 Division. He initially joined Bleed and then also left (and returned back) to Talon after Bleed was late in paying him 2 months' worth of salary.

Apparently Marvin’s twitter had the description “Get Scammed”, which was removed as soon as people noticed.

What I don't like in Esports in general is the delayed payments. I have worked in esports as a freelance/part-time and it is not a fun industry when it comes to this kind of thing. Imagine rendering the service you've done and you need to wait a minimum of a month to a fucking year just to get paid. It is a domino effect from sponsors/companies -> organizers -> esports organizations -> players and coaches. It's not just the player side but the backend as well.

For the Filipino players who got stranded, luckily SG is close to PH and they can go home if needed. Imagine as an import in a faraway region (ex. PH to Brazil) and your org fucks up and decided to abandon everybody and leaves you in a foreign country that would take you a day to go back to PH. The stress and trauma you need to go through.

I think its time for a change in esports in terms on how it ran and to keep it thriving. We need to properly standardized everything.

Yeah the guy is cooked. If Ministry of Manpower of Singapore catches onto it this guy is going to catch hell for it while in prison.

MLBB is huge in SEA but the salary of the Filipino players in the local pro league is barely sustainable, so playing for an oversea organization was a huge opportunity for them to make more money. Now, I feel like Filipino players will be more sceptical on playing for overseas org.

Bleed was also set to sign Aspas who many considered as the goat of Valorant but they were stripped of their VCT slot before it happened

Couple of months back, i watched a stream of Bleed's Valorant IGL crazyguy and he basically said that the org was run basically by the owner's pocket money and I was like wtf ? The org was a new name, has no big sponsor, no big influence, multiple divisions with good players that come with hefty salaries, surely that's not sustainable right ? I mean big orgs with big sponsors like G2 are barely making a profit and there's this Singaporean splashing big cash with no sureway of making it back ? Yeah Singaporeans are notoriously rich but come on, isn't it fishy ?
And now here we are ...

I dont think much people realize how heartbreaking the recent news is... To start MLBB is mostly a Philippine dominated game, in general what you have to know about the game is that it's a MOBA like League of Legends that has a fairly large esports scene with countries like Indonesia, Singapore, and Philippines having their own professional league. Due to fierce competition, getting into and staying in the Philippine Pro League is hard especially that the starting salary of new players mostly come from either small upcoming orgs or from small tournaments that might not even be enough to sustain 3 meals a day for a family. So getting an opportunity overseas is one of the ways to actually make a living by playing the game here in PH, the salary is much nicer and the competition overseas isnt as bad as in PH where every team is a monster, in other countries like Singapore in this case, the Pro League there isnt as fierce compared to PH server so these players can actually get a breakthrough in their career, maybe getting picked up by an org in PH to play in the Pro League there, or even stay overseas where the salary is fine. The Philippines isnt a perfect country, poverty is a huge problem here, so seeing these imported players going overseas just to pursue their passion while sustaining for their family is really something to admire, but when shits like this happen where they dont get payed and even get stranded overseas? Its truly heartbreaking considering that just to go home their families had to buy them plane tickets with THEIR OWN MONEY when the point of going overseas and playing there is to MAKE MONEY for them, which at worst case scenario its money they dont even have so they end up being in debt.

I know Bleed Esports in MLBB was a Singaporean team, but never knew the roster was mainly PH. Truly a bad look of Singapore, generally Singaporean orgs are actually great. Knowing Singapore, I won't be surprised if this end up being an investigation done by Singapore Government in the future.

Lemme guess, in a few days/weeks, we'll hear some news about Mervyn Goh En Wei flying to another country to run and hide from all this shit and go back eventually when everything has subsided down.
