I like David Lynch's take on creativity coming from a sort of place of planned adventure. He has such a structured life in general but allows specific times in the day where his mind just goes off and plays. He talks about it like being in an ocean and fishing. Its harder to fish when the sea is choppy but when you've got the balances in place, and put yourself in a mediative state, Lynch really get things going with creativity.

The ability to draw connections between seemingly unrelated things is one aspect of intelligence. The ability to learn new things is another. The ability to read people, and especially a crowd, is another. The fact that he doesn’t even describe what “smart” means in this context tells me he’s got no idea what he’s talking about.

Theo Von is a great example of an intelligent comedian, playing the role of the dumbest guy in the room, while making insanely creative connections and clever jokes. Sometimes they’re absurd, sometimes they’re very intelligently worded, but they almost all require intelligence. Norm MacDonald is another example. Bill Burr. Rick Glassman. Highly intelligent idiots. Just being loud and obnoxious isn’t funny.

The least funny people I know are also the dumbest. The funniest people I know are the most intelligent, AND very emotionally intelligent and empathetic. The ability to learn, draw connections, and think creatively all require intelligence. There is no way around that.

Intelligence and humor are different things. There are a few very intelligent and funny people and you can argue that one of the more intelligent things in life is to make the people around you laugh. But yeah, in general, they are different things
