Sidechain compression lookahead is when you're racing downhill on your mountain bike and a stick gets stuck between your chain and sprocket and causes you to fly over your handlebars through the air and you immediately start looking ahead for any obstacles you're about to crash into.

as an alternative, I suppose you could always bounce in place a dummy/ghost duplicate track of your kick, (set it to no output) and use that as the input for your side chain compressor. Then you can slide the ghost kick back a few ms to let the compressor get a head start. Could save you a bit on cpu latency and also let you use any compressor whether or not it has a lookahead function.

great video! Question Multiplier: when you say that the sidechain compression is "delayed" but it is occuring earlier, would you refer to this as a negative delay?

maybe use some side chain compression to duck the audio everytime you take a breath in. TF. Who talks like that? is there no oxygen in that room you're in?? you're gasping for air. it's more than just weird; it's so goddamn annoying. ps your explaination is more suited for attack/release .. lookahead also takes into account the tiny amount of time for the compressor to analyse the upcoming transients and then engage. back in the day we would have created a second track, just like you showed because we didn't want to lose the initial transient of the kick (when recorded live).. so look ahead allows this to me done without having to duplicate and time shift
