As someone with zero computer knowledge, I have been hyping myself up to do this for months- and this is the video that put me over the edge and gave me the confidence to do it. long story short, my broken laptop is no longer Oh my god thank you

Excellent video. My Surface Book 1 was suffering from swollen batteries syndrome and the bottom cover of the keyboard base had actually partially separated because of that. I followed your instructions to the letter and within about an hour I had given my laptop a new lease on life. The most tedious part was getting the old adhesive gunk scraped away and I have found that a small flat head screwdriver works really well for this. Thank you!

Another satisfied follower!! I watched your video, ordered the battery from amazon, and just finished the swap. My old Surface book is cranking again. Thank you for the tech tips. You are a ROCKSTAR!!

THANK YOU! I noticed that the bottom of my Surface Book (Gen 1 from 2016) was starting to separate/unglue so I purchased an open box battery on Amazon for $24 and some 2mm double sided electronic repair adhesive tape. Followed the instructions in this video and had the new battery working perfectly in about 45 minutes! All 4 of the old batteries in the old battery pack were swelling pretty bad.

If anyone *really* needs their Surfacebook to work now and can't wait for a battery to do this, you *can* boot the Surfacebook into a Linux distro like Ubuntu. I didn't have swollen batteries, but after a few years of disuse mine would not charge or boot Windows even when plugged in (it just shut itself down seconds after booting). I made a bootable USB with Ubuntu and it booted fine (still no charging, though). You can just use a live USB if you need to keep your Windows files, but if not then you can just install Linux and use the computer with a charger.

In fact I've been doing just that for months instead of installing the new battery I got on ebay, lol.

Thanks for the video! It helped me get over the fear of not doing it right and I just got it opened up. It will be nice to have a laptop that doesn't instantly die if I accidentally brush the charger cable when I get up to stretch, lol.

Here's to hoping the screen battery is good and was just being held back by a bad keyboard battery...😅

Great video, this was an excellent way of opening the back panel and it worked out nicely for me.

Now, a few tips for various issues other SB1 owners may have...
If you're noticing an intermittent dGPU connection or have external monitor / Surface Dock issues, I recommend disconnecting the two ribbon connectors at the top near the hinge and cleaning them with a generous amount of 99.9% isopropanol contact spray while you have the base open and battery disconnected. Pure isopropyl alcohol is safe on the circuit board when it is de-energised and will resolve various keyboard base connection problems. It's also a good idea to follow up with an additional spray of normal compressed air to flush away excess alcohol. After the area has dried, reattach the ribbon cables with gloves or clean hands and verify the keyboard and touch pad still work. If for some reason your touch pad dies, it may begin to work again if you reverse the connection of the touch pad ribbon cable since replacements are hard to come by (quick & dirty fix).

Thanks for the vid. Helped a lot. Had the battery swell up and popped a tiny part of the keyboard back plate off.

Thanks for this. My battery packs are already puffy and I was considering replacing them but heat on the back of this thing does not seem like a good idea. Thinking I'm just going to use the top portion as a tablet

Thank you for sharing this. I couldn't power on my MSB and thought everything was lost forever, but it was just a dead keyboard. I'm charging both components now and hope this returns my computer back to normal. 🙏🏽

This worked great! I initially tried removing the back without a heat gun and made very little progress, but once I bit the bullet and grabbed one things moved along much quicker! (was also less dangerous since I wasn't having to push the tools as hard to dislodge the adhesive). I found that ~10 seconds at a time was enough to loosen the glue without burning the batteries. Thanks for the video!

For the heat gun, is it possible to use a blow dryer or is the heat not strong enough for that?

Nice Video
Tip 1: The side with 2x USB and SD card has no glue/tape under the ports. Easily a prying tool can be inserted.
Tip 2: Are you sure you still want a "new" battery? I replaced mine with coins to keep the weight balance. At its age the new (very old kept in stock batteries) are senseless.

I plan to replace my SB2 battery, the only thing I would do different is put a tiny bit of Goof Off into the crevice when removing the cover, apply it to the edge of a credit card to remove batteries, and to clean old adhesive.
