This is an excellent summary of the Japanese Navy's history, kudos to you Elinor! Just want to make two comments here. It was pointed out by Parshall and Tully in their book "Shattered Sword"-about the Battle of Midway-that the Battle of Tsushima, the greatest victory in the IJN's history, bore fatal fruit for the Japanese a few decades later by instilling in the naval leadership the idea that a war could be won in a single decisive battle. In seeking out that decisive engagement the Japanese overreached in its effort to conquer Midway, a mid-Pacific U.S. outpost that was of dubious strategic value to Japan and which had important tactical advantages for the U.S. Navy and Marines. The other point I wanted to make was that in the first four decades of the 20th Century the Japanese military through enormous exertions built up a fleet comparable to those of the United States and Britain and Japan's military/political leadership deluded itself into thinking it could advantageously fight a war with those powers. Once the war was underway the vast inadequacy of Japan's industrial base to sustain its military forces was all too apparent.

Elinor. You've done a serious amount of research. I don't think anyone has done this before you. I hope your channel grows with people who appreciate your hard work. 🙂

I find it comforting that my grandfather's ship, the USS Hunter Liggett, will never be featured on your channel, as the Liggett, an "attack transport", actually survived WW2. Though it was late 1942 she was the last attack transport we had left.

It's interesting to learn about the Japanese Navy now days. Especially as it was not covered when I was in school.

Great Vid! I was thinking at first this was going to be on the Yamato as she represented to many the end of the Empire of Japan when she was sunk.

Dear Derek-San, and Elinor-rus,

Making progress, just been busy! Going together well, approximately halfway done.

Well done by the way! It is very hard to even touch on such a vast topic in a digestible size.

All the best, take care guys.

Elsinor, you have inspired me!! Again!! How about another collaboration (actually two)? Japanese submarines did some interesting things during WW2 (for FFF) and the USS Barb is an amazing story (for Shipwreck Sunday). Let me know.

Speaking of the Russo-Japanese was, you should do an episode about the Kamchatka in early April.

The IJN never learned from the Anglo-German naval race in the years before WW1 on the consequences of trying to match your greatest rival.

Excellent video Elinor 😊

Midway was really the turning point for Japan. Not that they didn't lose too many planes or pilots, they lost the bulk of their aircraft carriers, which severely limited their ability to refuel & restock ammunition.

Like some have already commented, they didn't teach anything about the Japanese Navy when I was in school about a hundred years ago 😂😂😂lol

The 'Nagato' (Yamamoto's Flagship) is my favorite. I wish they wouldn't have sunk her in operation crossroads.

The rise of the Japanese navy from a medival fleet to be comparable to the former Kriegsmarine is just more that astoneshing. Despite the Japanes navy was reduced to nothing under the American control. They have made a slow but steady comaback.

One thing the Japanese did wrong was not having certain classes of carriers. They were all different types of carriers.

As a maintenance manager, just thinking about the hassle of ordering repair parts for all of those different types of carriers makes me cringe.

On the other side, everything on the American Essex carriers was interchangeable, including the fight crews.

Same with all of our jeep carriers and Liberty ships.

The Americans were masters of streamlining production in World War Two.

The Germans had the same problem with their tanks as the Japanese had with their ships.

Being a quartermaster for the Axis had to have been a nightmare.
