A hero and a girl fall in love, and then are separated by forces beyond their control.

Our hero is depressed for a while and trudges forward, but then finds their heart again.

Thus empowered, our hero runs back to their love as fast as they can, only to be mortally wounded by an inexorable force.

As what little life that remains within them slips away, they dream that they mount a majestic steed, overcome a terrible enemy, and finally meet their love again.

However, time has run out. The wait was too long; their love has moved on without them.

You see, our tragic hero knows, deep down, that there is no "yeah" waiting for them at the end of their journey, whether or not they reach it. They will not allow themselves that final delusion.
