Q: Why doesn't it breath, Anton?
A: It's incredibly lazy.

🤣 Thanks Anton 👍

“If you don’t breathe, you can do it even quicker.”

Sounds like a kinky ex.

This sure sounds like the lectures I got from my mom when she looked in my bedroom and saw that I hadn't moved all day. I had moved... just returned to my favorite spot. ... Hey, the line worked most of the time!

This is a fascinating discovery, but it is NOT the only known anaerobic animal. From Wikipedia's "Anaerobic organism" page: "In 2010 three species of anaerobic loricifera were discovered in the hypersaline anoxic L'Atalante basin at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. They lack mitochondria..." They live in a brine pool, a region with extremely high salt concentration and no oxygen whose water does not mix with the rest of the sea. Loricifera is an obscure phylum of extremely small animals.

Perhaps these Henneguya salminincola survived Covid-18 700 million years ago and decided that breathing was not a good idea :)

My guess is that they lost the mitochondria when they started reproducing faster than their mitochondria could keep up, so they ended up with offspring that had no mitochondria. As Eukaryotes, their cells would still have the fermentative metabolic pathways that exist outside the mitochondria, that is, the pathways that break down glucose to lactic acid. So basically they've become swimming yeast.
