I always do a clean install. I just swapped from an X570 to an X570S board in a machine. They should be pretty much identical outside of drivers, but I had been running that install for a couple of years at that point and had decided to do a clean install anyways just to have a fresh install. I don't think people realize how junked up Windows installs get over time and doing a clean install isn't that hard for the average user. If I had just built a system and had to swap the board for something similar... I probably wouldn't bother, but if you've been using that system for close to a year, a clean install is never a bad idea to clean out the cobwebs. It happens faster than you might think.

You are very correct on going from b550 to b650. I did exactly what you described and it did boot and run but not well. Usb issues, micro stutters for no reason, slow internet ethernet and wifi. For sure it works just not well. All was resolved with a clean install. Great advice!

Within a z690 and a z790 the differences are relatively small, and given the release date of both, assuming windows was installed fresh on the z690, it will do work. Done it myself, no issues.

Always heard that you cannot do this with an OEM version of Windows since it will deactivate itself if you change motherboards. In fact, I had a Windows 10 that did that when I swapped out the video card. So it could happen when you change hardware using an OEM version.

Is there much of a difference the between k, kf f, and non k chips ? I've never seen you discuss that before. Are the difference's between the chips minimal ?I still havent upgraded my i9 10850k cpu yet. I'm considering grabbing the 13900 soon.

My cousin is soooo lazy that he transferred his laptop windows 10 with a 4700hq to his desktop 5950x. I told him he badly needs to reinstall windows. As I highly recommend. But he simply doesn't want to out of sheer laziness. It cringes me knowing it but nothing I can do lol. I told him to benchmark it and see why he should reinstall. And of course, because we have the same processor and same GPU for the matter 5950x and 7900xtx now his system CPU scores I kid you not 20-25% lower and the GPU tests are 15-20% lower than my system with identical specs and his CPU just sits idle using 8% load for no reason.... I cringe every time I see his mess of an operating system lol. He keeps the system physically clean and well-kept but for what it is tis slower then where it should be. Much slower. It's like we not even using the same speced system Because mine is far snappier and more responsive lol.

Well when I ugraded from my z690 board to z790 one, the PC didn't even boot so yeah a fresh reinstall was pretty much mandatory

I always read that we should do a fresh install but my question is, that would clear the C drive and remove everything else correct? I save games on the other drives but programs and apps are saved there, how would I keep that?

Just swapped my work laptop m.2 out. Went from i3 11th Gen to i7 9th gen. Ya it's backwards but the i3 won't support my work load like the i7 can. Plus the older laptop has a 1050 GTX in it for multiple monitors support

Honestly, i would only re-install or do clean windows install once every 3 years or so, not bothering if im doing a hardware upgrade or not, just cuz windows with the years and big upgrades ends getting slow.

I agree with what you and most commenters have said, and next platform upgrade I do I will reinstall, but I need to go devil's advocate. I've been running the same version of Windows upgraded from 7 to 8, then 8.1, then 10, now 11, including an upgrade from Z68 with a 2500K to Z390 with a 9900K. Rock solid, no problems. Windows is incredibly resilient these days!

I had a windows 10 on a small ssd for my dell prebuilt Q6600, then put it in my frankenstein dell motherboard i7 2600 and then put it in my asus z77 i7 4770 pc ... did not reinstall, no problem ever ... when I wanted to put it in my z490 tomahawk i5 10600kf it just booted and crashed immediately at every boot attempt. I reinstalled and then it was fine. Really funny it was able to sustain so many platform changes and the most modern build finally was able to put down that venerable old windows 10 install.

It depends on MS allowing the key to still apply to the new hardware from the old hardware.

That's what really matters and you won't really know till you try it, as MS will block the key for the new hardware and you'll need to buy a new key, which is a new reinstall.

I just swapped from a Z590 to a different Z590 board and Windows wanted a new license. There was a different network card and it needed a driver but it otherwise performed as it should have.

My question is, do you have to worry about updating the bois on the board??

I would always reinstall windows, although it sucks, atleast you'll get the peace of mind, which is worth it.
