For many years, we have been repeating that for each human cell in a person there are at least 10 bacterial cells. Although this is an over-estimation, recent evidence shows that hominids and certain gut colonizing bacteria co-evolved. To demonstrate this, a recent study analyzed fecal samples from humans, chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas targeting 3 prominent families in the gut microbiome: Bifidobacteriaceae, Bacteriaceae, and Lachnospiraceae.
