ESP-01 in 2020 - outdated or still just as good?

Is the ESP-01 and ESP-01S from the ESP8266 family still relevant in 2020?
Is it still worth buying?

The ESP01 was the first in the ESP8266 family that became very popular. But this was a while back. Now you can get these small modules for under $2. But are they still any good, or are they outdated?

2023/12 still using it, I love it. the only problem for me is that sometime I don't need those pins on it by default, I should take off them by myself.

I'm still using it in 2021! I hope they do not discontinue this little boy, it's really powerful!

52 subscribers huh, you are going to need to upgrade to a bigger display guys ;) 8.77k subscribers now as of this writing in 2022, great stuff. I've done a lot with esp32 and the larger STM chips. I'm working on a product now that the esp01 is perfect for, the footprint (and price) is unbeatable.

I have been using the ESP8266-12 for so many projects as I love them.... I have just bought my first 5 x ESP-01 so hopefully i will get as much enjoyment out of these little boards.

I have upgraded most of my esp01 modules with 4MB ram for OTA. I have also made use of some of the other GPIOs with some very careful soldering... I love this little guy

Thank you very much, for a clear and informative video. I found your channel while looking for information on how to, better, use my new 3018 CNC machine. You've been able to clarify many of the problems I've been having with FlatCAM.

Further more, I cannot fully describe my pleasure at viewing the outtakes I found at the end. Please consider yourselves liked, followed, and likely shared, later on.

The ESP-01 can be also used as wireless connection module and can cooperate with any other MCU board. The benefits of this is that it simplifies the program for the main controller and you can put all the network and security stuff inside the ESP-01. I also made an instant serial connection between two ESP-01s via websockets, it acts like a virtual wire between two devices. By doing it this way, the code for the main controller is very simple and all complicated connection and security stuff is done by the ESP-01. The main program handles only two states, connected or disconnected, that's all. A very clean solution.

Really helpful, I plan on using the ESP01 for a simple IOT Project.

I am still using and planning on esp8266 esp01 in the foreseeable future.

Also great Video on the 3ua power saving mode. I am starting to work on smaller projects and will test the limits of using less power.
Thanks,
Jeff

Thank you for this video! Oct 2020 and I was going to start to mess around with these devices. I'm very interested in simple IoT devices. This being the case I checked out these boards but was not sure if I should use them. I'll have to look over your channel for some cool examples!

after viewing several videos, only your video explained that esp01s has pull-up resistor for en and rst (or perhaps i missed that info). that means i don't need to connect en to 3.3v. less wires.. thank you

I Love your videos! They have a lot of potential! Keep the great work!

I flash them with Tasmota, and for the cost it's totally unbeatable. I can control ws2812b led stripes, relays, temperature sensors etc. Perfect for this usage!

2024/11 - still using it.
They're just so cheap! If you want a dozen of these things you can develop a project and get it rolled out quickly and for under $20

Amazing you love the ESP 01 so much but have not done any projects using it or showing how to program

are there any projects to emulate a commercial PIR or motion sensor that works with Alexa, google assistant, or smartthings?
I see that there is a project to emulate a belkin wemo smart plug but can I do the same thing with a motion sensor ?
like emulate a sonoff or tuya motion sensor or other esp based sensor that works with google and alexa that doesn't require me to use a broker like MQTT?
I want to make some motion sensors using RCWL-0516 instead of PIR, I wonder if it will interfere with the wifi
, PIR motion sensors are terrible and false trigger too much, also I will be using some old phone chargers and wall warts to power everything and MP1584EN buck converter because I have no idea if it can done with battery with RCWL-0516 and low power mode, but most places I want to out sensors I will have access to power anyway.
