John Carmack always made his game to last more than a lifetime, Wish more devs had the same dedication as he had into make games good beyond the gameplay aspects.

The Dreamcast was ahead of it's time

After first hearing about PSO a few years back I basically became obsessed with the Dreamcast and its online catalog, it's honestly such an underrated console and I'm glad people are still dedicated to it to this day

dreamcast was one of the most forward-thinking consoles of all time. it's a real shame sega was already so crippled at that point, because i would have loved to have seen what they would have done in the PS3-360 era

I knew it was a wise move to keep my Phillips 29" 100Hz CRT with Dolby Surround and my Dreamcast 😁

This is how I got into online gaming back in the day. I miss this game and the old DC Q3A community so much!

quake3arena was the first PC game that really enthralled me... the best part is it ran natively under Linux which was a big deal for someone like me as I was starting to get really deep into learning it back in 1996. I got to be pretty nasty with that railgun, son!

Dreamcast having keyboard and mouse controls is a massive W for Sega

I played this back in 2001 online like crazy. One of the few PAL versions who's online mode did NOT get scrubbed before release (Looking at YOU, Unreal and i even made some friends back then while playing online whom i talked to via phone afterwards so we sent each other SMS texts. I was lucky enough of having the keyboard when i got my Dreamcast so browsing with it and chatting was super easy. I never had the mouse though but my best friend did, including a PS/2 to DC controller adaper so he could hook up a standard PS/2 computer keyboard to it. That's how he played Quake 3 online on the Dreamcast. That Son of a... had such a major benefit since i only played it with gamepad :P

Dial up still works. My dad's old centurytel login still works like a decade and a half later for some reason

Aw man this was so good split screen back in the day. I had 2 DC mice (mouses?) So my best friend and I would each play with a mouse and a controller each. You could use the left side of the DC controller in place of the keyboard and it worked amazingly!

I was just young enough to not have appreciated the Dreamcast. I got my N64 in '99 when I was 4 and didn't give any other platform a chance until the 360 in 2008. But looking back now as a 28 year old with disposable income, it's time to collect as much video game history up to 6th generation as possible

Very much ahead of it’s time. I still remember the Shenmue passport disc and the fact that it kept online rankings for scores in the Arcade games. It had online rankings long before Xbox Live was ever a thing and adopted the concept. Yeah, like all things SEGA back then, they were very much ahead of the curb.

Excellent video on the subject, I'm looking forward to seeing what other topics you're able to condense into 60 seconds or less! 😁👍 I really need to mess around with the Dreamcast more, I'm itching to try out the online functionality!

Sidenote: I've been playing your Original Xbox homebrew since I was a kid, it's been awesome to be able to put a name to the face! Folks like you kickstarted my I.T. and modding fixation, thanks for the work you've done for the community!

Doesn't much more old school than a commodore CRT. Lovely.
