question, how can i change a solid vector image into multiple colors? it's an image that have figures in it but i want to change the color of some of them

So I’m trying to do the inverse of this with a color background and a black and white object. I can recollect the object however when I make the background visible again the image record the object I made black and white. What can I do to fix that?

I was looking for the easier way of doing via duplicating the picture, copying and pasting one on top of the other, making one black and white, then with the eraser tool simply rub out the area you want to keep coloured. I know how to do this in Paint Shop Pro but need to find out how to do it in Adobe Photoshop?
