The government needs to take more consistent and urgent action to tackle climate change and meet its net zero goals - or risk damaging the country's economic future, according to a Conservative MP.

Chris Skidmore was tasked with carrying out a report into the business case for delivering the net zero target by the former prime minister Liz Truss.

He's called for a range of actions including banning gas boilers within a decade.

The government has insisted the UK is leading the world in tackling climate change.

Instead of putting solar on farm land why not make sure every warehouse and large factory/ office has solar on the roof?

Planning permissions on new builds is what's screwing us.

'The government needs to take more consistent and urgent action to tackle climate change and meet its net zero goals - or risk damaging the country's economic future.' What???? I thought this was about saving the planet not about saving £'s!!

Good luck with that. If it doesn't make money they don't want to know.

All new builds should have solar panels on them as standard and better subsidies for everyone else to get them fitted

On Solar the government owns a good part of UK housing stock through social housing, adding solar to those roofs, where they are pointed in the right direction, and just dumping that power in the grid, would increase UK energy generation, yes you have to pay for the infrastructure, but the feed stock the solar gain from the sun is free, add community battery storage, and the system gets even better.

So for going green we cover farm land in solar to then use bunker diesel to deliver the food from other countries to make up for the shortfall in production.

Global warming doesn't necessarily mean warming everywhere, more like unusual weather conditions. For UK, it could actually mean cooling as fresh water from the Arctic pushes the Gulf Stream south.
Whatever UK manages to achieve is a drop in the ocean, it needs a global effort. Net zero may bring economic benefits though if done right, something this government is incapable of.

There are many old & "drafty" homes in the UK so it's time to get moving on tackling that problem and not just "kicking the can down the road"...

Industries are the biggest offenders, not regular people.

The goal to reach net 0 is nonsense and will make little to no difference to the world as a whole, what it will do though is make most of the population financially worse off. The UK produces less than 1% of carbon on the world stage..you think shaving a few 0.1% off will do anything..china are building 80+ coal power stations a year! The uk gets to 0% buy passing their carbon onto other countries..a bit like when they ship thousands of tons of recyclables abroad and then it gets burnt or dumped into the sea...but hey it's not here right so we hit our goal.. 💩

Nobody talking about population growth

Rubbish. Any advancement would be undone by growth in India and China, it needs to be global or it makes no difference. So you've got to tell a whole region to go without energy as they can't afford more expensive fuels in those regions.

Current trends have shown that having to rely on the global market for energy can lead to disastrous prices and we will inevitability trend towards more occurrences of global energy shortages. The Tories could have avoided our current economic crisis if they had invested in renewable energy for the past 13 years. They are happy to be independent of brussels but dependant on oil and gas controlled by precarious governments.

For the record, the problem with hydrogen is not the cost of the boiler, but the insane cost of the hydrogen relative to natural gas or electricity

I'm sorry but I believe we need to cut co2 but why do people think its even possible to reach net zero. That's literally the equivalent of discovering an unlimited power source that has absolutely zero pollution in every sense of the word.
