All of them are found in such small numbers, that they sometimes aren't even acknowledged by the American Kennel Club. These are 10 of the rarest dog breeds on earth.

Number 10: Norwegian Lundehund.
Norwegian Lundehund have unique features like six toes on each foot.
Number 9: Azawakh.
These leggy hounds are native to West Africa and members of the sighthound family.
Number 8: Thai Ridgeback.
Until recently, the existence of this mysterious breed was almost unknown outside of Thailand.
Number 7: Otterhound.
This rare dog breed first appeared in medieval England, but wasn’t officially recognized until the 19th century.
Number 6: Mudi.
The Moodie is a herding breed that has existed since the 19th century.
Number 5: Lagotto Romagnolo.
These adorable fluffy dogs come from the Romagna sub-region of Italy.
Number 4: Nederlandse Kooikerhondje.
These cute pups nearly went extinct shortly after World War II making them one of the rarest dog breeds in the world.
Number 3: Xoloitzcuintli.
Also known as the Mexican Hairless Dog, this breed has been around for more than 3,000 years.
Number 2: Stabyhoun.
The Stabyhoun is a loving, loyal and active family dog.
Number 1: Kai Ken.
This rare breed is only one of six dog breeds native to Japan.
