Carlisle were heading out of the Football League as they were drawing 1-1 with Plymouth on the final day of the 1998/99 season. On-loan goalkeeper Jimmy Glass ventured up for a corner in injury time and smashed in a winner to save Carlisle.

"22 players inside the Plymouth penalty area"

That corner taker must've had long legs.

Butterfly effect: Jimmy Glass doesn't score, Carlisle gets relegated, Nigel Pearson sinks into obscurity, never rises to the heights of managing Leicester, doesn't save them, they don't win the league.

Scarborough would never return to the football league, and were liquidated in 2007 (but there’s a phoenix club called Scarborough Athletic). Carlisle were relegated briefly in the mid-2000’s but have otherwise remained in the football league. Just amazing the effect that this goal had for both clubs.

Man City 4, York 0 in division 2, how times have changed.

Nigel Pearson saved a poor Carlisle side back in 1999, yet the Watford management couldn’t trust him in 2020

What is it with Nigel Pearson and great escapes he's Harry Houdini in disguise surely

I grew up as a Scarborough fan but was born in 1995 so was too young to understand when this actually happened. It’s so interesting to see such a pivotal movement in my clubs history preserved like this! Especially given our Phoenix club Scarborough Athletic have just been promoted to the National League North!

Still the greatest thing I've ever seen in football. Sure, it's not a Champions League or World Cup final, but my god what must it have been like to be a Carlisle fan and be there that day (or a poor Scarborough fan!)

As a Carlisle fan IMO this is one of the best moments in football history.

I remember watching this as a kid. My Dad going mad celebrating even though he didn't support Carlisle. The goalkeeper of all people

I was at the Scarborough ground that day having driven up that morning from Oxfordshire. After the final whistle the chairman was in the stand, magnum of champagne in hand, waiting to celebrate when news came through about the Carlisle goal. I've never seen an atmosphere change so quickly. The chairman made a brief speech saying we will return, but of course they never did.

Still the most unexpected, most unbelievable moment in football history for me. Absolute scenes when that went in. I'll never forget my dad finding me on the terrace when the ball hit the net and saying 'it was Jimmy Glass' I've told the story about a million times and will never stop haha

Amazing how non dramatic Soocer Saturday was back then. Jeff barely seems bothered compared to what it became! Especially for such a massive moment!

We spent the next two years of break time shouting JIMMY every time we went for a 'hit and hope' shot
