I sincerely loathe vocal fry when people are speaking. 🤮 Like nails on a chalkboard for me. However, I agree that vocal fry peppered into vocals (where appropriate) can help to add texture and emotional depth to a performance.

Wow, I was impressed by your singing skills. I tried this too, but I sound like a sick donkey with the hick ups. I love your voice 🤗

Thank you for explaining this. I'm Gen-X and was reading about shifts in language use by younger generations. I was curious about vocal fry and what it actually sounds like. Thank you again!

I'm a Brit from the East Midlands, and do vocal fry all the time, but I also do hard attack on borh consonants and vowels, so it doesn't sound lazy. It's never been a conscious thing. It's always just been how I speak, but I've been watching these linguists' vids and realise now that I just talk different. There's a vid on my channel of me talking. 🤷‍♂️

I love that sound!! I didn´t even know people found it annoying, never paid much attention to it, just something your voice sometimes does...

I didn't notice that vocal fry was a thing until recently. Having viewed some videos, I'm reminded of this author whose subject matter is AI and its adverse impacts. Her name is Whitney Webb. As I have seen several of her videos, I wondered if anyone would bother to listen to her and say whether she speaks in vocal fry. There's something pronounced about how she expresses herself in this regard, it seems.

GenX here, I had to look this term up, thank you for educating me.☺️ Sounds like Jackée Harry from the mid 80’s sitcom “227.” And yes, I found it to be annoying 🤷🏻‍♀️😂🤣

Extremely loose vocal fold undulations ARE used a great deal in non "classical" vocal music. The use of it has not been proven to cause vocal nodules (which in this day and age can be sliced off with a lazer "knife"). However, coupled with a lack of breath support, release of back tongue tension, not singing on pure vowel sounds and not undetstanding how to sing into your resonation areas with the overuse of vocal fry can cause damage. I have opera colleagues who use this technique and feel it is successful. I've not found it beneficial for my singing. Dedicated study to the craft of vocal arts (no matter the style) and a lifestyle that supports healthy vocal/body/mind practices are key to longevity in singing. Good poat about a sometimes controversial subject. I enjoy hearing your excellent teaching videos.
