I used to carry a long c cell flashlight for protection. It was narrow enough for my grip but light enough to control.
I also used to carry a yawara stick I made from Filipino hardwood. It was 1" x 9" long.
My Hapkido teacher taught me how to use it. It was used like a long arnis stick. Quite the self defense weapon!

P.s. strobe is GREAT at night for protection. Had a crazy homeless person come after me in a parking lot years ago And a high quality tactical strobe was on my person, and completely disoriented him, and gave me plenty of time to make distance
