Rafael is hotheaded and bloodthirsty so he gets defensive weapons. Mikey is not concentrated and his mind constantly wanders, yet he is given nunchucks, weapon’s of concentration. Leonardo is the calm one and he is given the only weapon with a blade, the katana. And the technological one, donnatello, is given a bo staff which is literally a stick. So while originally it was a joke, there is still meaning behind this.
