When the video switches to the photo of the marines, that is my Dad on the left. Vernon Hoying, 6th Marine Division, 22nd Marines! He was wounded in the arm during the battle, but returned to his company 8 days later. His platoon only had 3 original man at the end of the 82 day battle (killed or evacuated). Dad lived to be 95 years old.

In 1981 while stationed on Kadena Air Base a road was being built past the building I worked in. A grave (We called them turtles) was in the way and had to be moved. When it was opened an American Soldier killed in the battle was found. Air Force casualty affairs treated the find as if the solder had died that day. A sister of the soldier was located and an Army Notification Team dispatched to take her the news that her MIA brother had been found. This soldier was within yards of US military personnel since WW2 and we didn't know. The Japanese grave was not maintained by a family because they had all died in the battle.

The greatest generation. My dad was one and he always refused to talk about the war. I learned about him and his unit when i found a couple of books about his unit he had stored away after his death. He was also part of the first tash force into Korea. He was wounded in both conflicts. I miss him so much.

The fight for Okinawa lasted 82 days, the Navy lost an average of a ship a day. The number of sailors being lost, at about 8000+, sounds more than correct!
