A plane of movement is a specific direction in which a joint or limb can move, such as forward and backwards, side to side, or rotationally. We call this sagittal, frontal and transverse

An axis of movement is an imaginary line in which a joint or limb moves around.

We have medial-lateral where typically a joint flexes and extends in the sagittal plane.

Anterior-posterior axis where adduction and abduction occur in the frontal plane

and finally, longitudinal whereby any rotation occurs in the transverse plane.
